Some call it the most powerful job in the world. It calls for leadership, intelligence, determination and character. That job is the president of the United States of America. Barack Obama is the current president having been inaugurated in January 2009. Most potential presidents motivation isn’t to become rich from the earnings they receive for their role, however their salary can be very generous when compared with the average Americans salary.
As president, Barack Obama earns $400,000 on top of a $150,000 expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account and approximately $19,000 for entertainment. Taking into account the responsibility and pressure of the role, few would argue that he does not deserve this salary.
As the Constitution prohibits pay raises for sitting presidents Obama will not be getting a pay rise within his presidency. President Clinton last signed legislation that increased the salary to $400,000, effective from January 2001. This was the first presidential pay raise since 1969. At that time the president’s salary was raised from $100,000 to $200,000. As well as the salary and expense accounts, Barack Obama is given free housing along with many benefits. The White House is huge and has 132 rooms and 32 bathrooms. On top of this it has loads of leisure facilities including a bowling alley, movie theater, billiards room, jogging track, tennis court and putting greens.
So how did Obama work his way up to president? Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama graduated of Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He was employed as a civil rights attorney while he was in Chicago and worked at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004 where he taught constitutional law.
Between 1997 to 2004, Obama served three terms in the Illinois Senate. He was unsuccessful in his attempt for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000 but that didn’t hold him back and in 2004, he ran for United States Senate. In February 2007, his presidential campaign began , and in 2008 he won his party’s nomination. In the 2008 general election, he beat Republican John McCain and was inaugurated as president of the United States on January 20, 2009.
On October 8, 2009, Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Along with the prestige he got awarded 1.4 million dollars. However Obama wont keep this money. Shortly after the announcement that the award would go to him, the White House said he would donate the$1.4 million prize to charity.
